This paper aims to present the five conditions that, according to the American sociologist Vincent Tinto (1999), influence the permanence of students at university, especially those who are arriving and during the first critical year, namely: expectation, support, feedback (feedback), involvement and learning. Its starting point is a a Scientific Initiation project carried out together with freshmen who entered the Public Administration course at the State University of Norte Fluminense Darcy Ribeiro(Uenf) in 2020. To describe the five conditions in the students' reality, we used a bibliographic review of articles by Tinto. To obtain empirical data, we resorted to direct observation and surveys on integrative activities of reception and monitoring. The integrative activities carried out in the meetings with the students guided discussions on socio-academic relationships, such as permanence, hazing, the first year of graduation, the importance of welcoming and monitoring. In addition, the article highlights the socio-academic relationships that have been created in the midst of an atypical situation such as the Covid-19 pandemic.
