Understanding the role of innovation in regional environments has transformed economic, social and cultural structures. At the same time, strategies for developing solutions through partnerships and collaborations have been gaining considerable traction. In this context, the main motivation for this study is to understand how innovation can be a strategic factor in regional development, especially in the state of Roraima, Brazil's northernmost Amazon region. It is understood that the process of generating innovation can be seen as a broader and more collective procedure, stimulating an understanding of co-operation and interactivity, highlighting the alliances of the academia-government-business triad. The aim of this article is to analyse the innovation ecosystem in the state of Roraima as an instrument to support regional development, a case study chosen for its timeliness and convenience. The research was carried out using the ITU/UN ecosystem mapping tool. With regard to the research findings, it was observed that the ecosystem is still in the emerging phase of defining its vision and identity. The results give us insight into a number of gaps in studies related to the use of strategic alliances and cooperation processes in emerging ecosystems, including the need for partnerships to develop mutual learning, cross-fertilisation and an increase in the level of complexity of the innovations generated in ecosystems, with a focus on increasing regional competitiveness. For future work, we suggest studies on the strategic innovation plan for the state of Roraima.
