The life of Berta Ribeiro, an important Brazilian anthropologist, can be told as a long journey in search for a family. Born in Bessarabia, she lost at a young age her Romanian family. For years she was a ward of the Communist Party. Got her definitive profession when she met the anthropologist and educator Darcy Ribeiro, becoming his wife and dedicated assistant. For some time, he also gave her a family. But the relationship turned out to be very tumultuous. She only found the feeling of true family support among the Desâna, of the Upper Rio Negro. With her help two of them became the first indigenous people to publish books in Brazil. She also left an important collection – objects and research – about the material culture of the original peoples of our country.
