Gun violence has been a constant concern in Brazil over the years. Men not only make up the majority of victims of these crimes, but they are also the main buyers of guns in the country. To understand why they seek firearms, it is essential to understand the connection between masculinity and weaponry. The use of these tools as a way of reaffirming status is one of the main motivations, along with personal protection, that drives men to own guns. To deepen the knowledge about this profile, two studies on the subject carried out in the country were analyzed and compared: the research by Keinert (2006) and Santos (2021). The comparison of these studies, carried out at different times and with different geographic scopes, revealed that individuals who seek firearms are predominantly white, middle-income men, with high school education, and who prefer handguns. With the changes in firearm control policy in Brazil, in effect between 2019 and 2023, there was a significant increase in the demand for guns. To better understand this audience, data from the re-registration of 962,783 firearms carried out in 2023 were analyzed, which indicate that men continue to be the main buyers of weapons and that many were acquired in regions where there is a strong presence of agribusiness.
