Abstract

In this article, we intend to develop a reflection on the different passages and crossings that we must go through, as social scientists, to conform the analytical resources we have for understanding the making of society. We make use of an ethnographic and anthropological analysis that leads us to distinguish between the action of brooding and that of distrust. While in the latter the interactions follow the path of negotiation, in the act of schism the arbitrariness exercised by the schism agent annihilates the negotiations and the interstitial spaces for debate and dispute. We seek to highlight the repercussions of these operations in the production of an "illusionist rationality", to the detriment of the "enlightenment rationality", in the configuration of modern democracies. Contrastive work is an important methodological and analytical resource that we mobilize to weave the distinctions proposed in the article, hence France becomes a point of contrast for the analyses undertaken.
