Abstract

Considering the socio-structural determinations that now condition the urban requalification of the Port Zone of Rio de Janeiro, the purpose of this text is to examine effects related to the set of decisions and initiatives that correspond to what we call image policies inscribed in the city landscape. Here, priority is given to repositioning the Rio landscape of what is conventionally called the “Little Africa” of Rio. In particular, the web of sociofunctional interdependencies is of interest in this repositioning, having as one of its figures the advent of the “Historical and Archaeological Circuit of African Heritage”. It is not a question of reconstructing each of the threads of this fabric with historical and ethnographic precision. We will approach them in the reciprocities they establish among themselves, more precisely in the effect of place, generated by these mutual valences, on the socio-structural conditions listed above. At the limit, it is important to reflect on the concept given to the sense of locality present in the immediate of perceptions, with repercussions on the means of cognition and on the reports through which narratives trace the chain of the before, now and tomorrow of the city network.
