Abstract

This article recovers the work of Robert Castel, a contemporary French sociologist, with the aim of highlighting the possibility of its use for studies on capitalism and social inequality in contemporary Brazil. In an introductory way, it briefly presents a history on the concept of social exclusion in Brazilian sociology. It then reconstructs Castel's critique of the concept of “social exclusion”, as well as his theoretical counter proposal with the concept of “social disaffiliation”. Finally, I try to argue how this theoretical perspective can be mobilized critically, in order to contribute to the construction of a political sociology about capitalism and social inequality in Brazil today.
