This article discusses the politics of recognition of “quilombo” communities in Brazil with regards to the formation of new economic subjects. The shifts in normative criteria which inheres the very conception of the policy of recognition of these communities is first discussed. Secondly, we describe the policy production circuit, which involves the State, the civil society as well as expert systems. Finally, we discuss the relations between ethnicity and markets, considering the conversion of ethnic signs into "brands".
